Introduction
In the 1980s, as Imi Lichtenfeld transitioned into retirement, I became his right hand, and our journey included insightful discussions on Krav Maga and life. Amidst these conversations, we found comfort in a quaint coffee shop, “UGATI,” which means “my cake” in Hebrew, nestled in Netanya. This spot held a special place in our hearts, serving as the backdrop for not only discussions but also the refinement of Krav Maga techniques, accompanied by the delight of cakes and coffee.
The Unforgettable Cake – RIGO YANCHI
Imi’s fondness for this coffee shop wasn’t just about its ambiance; it was about a specific cake – RIGO YANCHI. Named after a famous Hungarian gipsy musician, Rigó Jancsi, this delectable creation had a history entwined with romance and culinary finesse. Rigó Jancsi’s passionate black eyes and his love affair with the Belgian duchess in Paris stirred a scandal that led to the creation of this renowned cake in a Budapest confectionery.
Coffee, Cake, and Krav Maga
Our gatherings at UGATI were more than just casual meet-ups. Over slices of RIGO YANCHI and steaming cups of coffee or tea, Imi and I discussed Krav Maga intricacies, constantly refining the system. The setting allowed us to blend work with camaraderie, fostering an environment where ideas flowed freely alongside jokes and laughter.
Imi’s Generosity
Imi’s generosity was as unmistakable as his passion for Krav Maga. Attempts to pay for our coffee and cake were akin to challenging a lion for its prey – close to impossible. He had reasons aplenty for insisting on footing the bill. Whether it was because I was a student, a newlywed, or a young father, Imi always found a rationale for his generosity. Eventually, my attempts to pay became infrequent, as Imi’s determination to settle the bill prevailed.
The Hungarian Culinary History Lesson
Decades later, as I journeyed to Hungary to spread Krav Maga, our favorite cake became a point of discussion. Some of our instructors even brought it along to satisfy my sweet tooth. During one such visit, an Expert Instructor, Erik, took it upon himself to enlighten me about the origins of Rigó Jancsi and his namesake cake. The romantic tale, combined with the confectioner’s brilliance, unfolded into a delightful saga, turning the cake into one of Hungary’s most famous sweets.
Conclusion
UGATI, RIGO YANCHI, and the rich conversations at the coffee shop remain etched in my memory. Imi’s lessons, both in Krav Maga and in savoring life’s sweet moments, continue to resonate. In the spirit of our gatherings, let’s relish the sweetness of both cake and camaraderie, acknowledging that sometimes, the best ideas emerge over a slice of history-infused dessert and a cup of coffee, or tea.
